Budding luthiers will receive hands on instruction as well as all of the tools needed to create their musical masterpiece.\n\nStudents are responsible for purchasing their own DIY Stratocaster or Telecaster kit prior to class. DESCRIPTION:Hand-cut joinery\, shaping\, and cutting out space for hardware all require handling a chisel. Become a chisel wizard with the ultimate cutting exercise: the Gottshall block! The challenge of the Gottshall block is to recreate the given image using only hand tools. Under the skillful guidance of Martin Hernandez\, you will complete all layout using a pencil and combination square\, and all cutting with only a chisel and a mallet. \n​InstructorMartin Alexander is an interdisciplinary crafts person with an emphasis in technical skill mastery and conceptual art. \n\nWhat to Wear\nPlease wear comfortable clothing and close-toed shoes. Boots or sneakers are fine and long pants are preferable. Do not wear loose or baggy clothing and please tie back long hair. No dangly jewelry. Please note\, this is a woodshop with no AC.  \n​ \nThis class is 4 hours long\, students are welcome to bring snacks. No experience necessary for ages 18+. \n \nYou can live artfully with the Maloof!

These instruments not only play beautifully and please the eye but also sell for thousands of dollars apiece. \n \nParticipants will: \nRecognize Suitable Wood: Learn to identify how found wood salvaged from nature and other sources can be given new life in guitar making. Understand which woods are useful and where to find them. \nDrying and Aging Wood: Explore simple\, readily available methods for drying and aging wood\, and learn how to determine when wood is ready for use. \nTools and Techniques: Get an overview of the common woodworking tools\, forms\, clamps\, glues\, and other materials needed to build your first guitar. Learn methods for bending\, shaping\, and joining the body\, neck\, fretboard\, and bridge. \nDecorative Inlay Work: Discover which locally grown wood species are suited for decorative inlay work\, and learn techniques for planning\, cutting\, matching\, gluing\, and finishing. \n \nYou can live artfully with the Maloof!
