Grouted stained glass is a technique that involves bonding stained (translucent) and mosaic (non translucent) glass to a clear glass substrate. The grout\, which is then applied between the glass pieces (negative space)\, contributes to the overall design. \nInstructorJanet Gruman is a versatile artist who works in stained glass\, printmaking\, and calligraphy. Guiding students through the creative process in a medium new to them always surprises\, pleases\, and gratifies her own artistic sensibilities.

SUMMARY:Steam Bending 101: Freehand Bending With Martin Alexander
DESCRIPTION:This is a 2 day workshopFriday and Saturday\, September 13 & 14 from 11 am to 3pm\, each day$300.00 per person\, and includes all materials. \n  \nAre you ready to unlock your next skill: bending wood? Traditionally used for boat building and chair making\, steam bending is an indispensable woodworking technique for shaping wood into sinuous curves. Martin Alexander will guide you through the process of steam bending\, from discussing proper setup to offering creative input. You will learn how to freehand bend steamed wood into knots and curves\, which will be used as components for a sculpture that is assembled using hot glue. This class is not labor-intensive and is accessible to all woodworking skill levels. It is designed for students looking to become familiar with creative steam bending and aims to introduce the necessary skills to continue steam bending at home.InstructorMartin Alexander is an interdisciplinary crafts person with an emphasis in technical skill mastery and conceptual art.What to WearPlease wear comfortable clothing and close-toed shoes. Boots or sneakers are fine and long pants are preferable. Do not wear loose or baggy clothing and please tie back long hair. No dangly jewelry. \n​ \nPlease note\, this is a woodshop with no AC.

DESCRIPTION:For beginners and intermediate woodworkers. \nThree consecutive days:  Sept. 20\, 21 and 22Friday\, Saturday and Sunday \nParticipants must attend all 3 days. \nBench Dimensions: 18”h x 27”w x 13.5”d \n9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day \nMaximum 5 students per course \n$1000.00 per person / $950 for members\, \nTuition includes wood and materials. \nDrinks and snacks are also provided\, but please pack a lunch for each day’s 1-hour mid-day meal break\, to be enjoyed in The Maloof’s olive tree-shaded courtyard\, weather permitting. \nA truly unforgettable way to learn. \n​ \nArtist Larry White was Sam Maloof’s first full-time woodworker employee\, hired as a college student at the age of 19. Today\, more than half a century later\, Larry is an accomplished master artist and sculptor\, who brings his personal story and expertise to this fantastic workshop. \nDuring 21 hours of intensive instruction over three days\, Larry will share his skills and insights across a full spectrum of woodworking tools and techniques. Students will be introduced to design\, pattern-making\, and selection of wood. Larry then guides the process step-by-step as you learn to saw\, shape\, join\, clamp\, glue and finish.  The course covers basic set-up\, safe use and calibration of the table saw\, band saw\, jointer/planer\, router\, rasp\, sanders and a range of essential hand tools\, materials and finishing products. \nThis course is modeled after our extraordinary Maloof Veterans Workshop\, launched in 2013\, and available previously only to men and women veterans of the US military.  Now open to participants over 18 years of age with little or no previous woodworking experience\, this course is a great way to jumpstart a new woodworking passion\, renew and refresh existing skills\, or find new inspiration for your next stage of exploration.

DESCRIPTION:No experience necessary for ages 18+. \nThis is a 2-Day WorkshopWorkshop Date: Saturday and Sunday\, September 28 & 29 from 9am-5pm\, both days$600 per person and includes all materials. \n \nClass Description \nThis hands-on\, 2-day workshop will guide you in creating a unique side table while introducing important aspects of design\, craftsmanship\, and various woodworking techniques. By the end of the workshop\, you will have completed a beautifully crafted table and gained the enriching experience of woodworking at the Maloof. \nThe table stands approximately 20 inches high\, with a curved triangular top measuring about 17 inches from corner to corner. This all-hardwood maple\, Maloof-inspired 3-legged side table\, designed by Dennis Hays\, features a distinctive “pinwheel” design pattern in both the top and base. \nThroughout the workshop\, you will learn the basics of woodworking techniques\, including an introduction to using a bandsaw\, multiple types of routers\, various sanders\, a Domino machine\, a miter saw\, and other hand tools. Each new experience will be accompanied by careful safety training to ensure a productive and safe learning environment. \n \nInstructor \nMaster woodworker Dennis Hays has been crafting furniture for 45 years. Dennis’ work consistently emphasizes beauty\, blending his own unique style with deep inspiration from Sam Maloof’s craftsmanship and vision.

Artists Felix Quintana will share the joy of cyanotype\, an experimental photography method; Rebecca Ustrell (Curious Publishing) will lead a workshop on Experimental Bookbinding; and artists Funchicken (Mark Todd and Esther Pearl Watson) will lead participants on a Garbage Zine adventure\, making zines using found and fun discarded materials. All workshops are free and open to the public\, as space allows\, and are drop-in between the hours of 10am-2pm. Martin will show you the tools and techniques needed to make handmade brooms. Imbued with a modest style and a reverence for natural materials\, these brooms will be the envy of house guests as they can also be used as functional display pieces. After taking this class you will never want to buy another plastic broom from the store ever again. \n\n\nAll supplies are included in the price and no experience is required. Some upper body and hand strength is required. \n\n\n\nInstructor\n\n\nMartin Alexander is an interdisciplinary crafts person with an emphasis in technical skill mastery and conceptual art. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat to Wear\n\nPlease wear comfortable clothing and close-toed shoes. Join us for Family Day at the Museum in celebration of the opening of our newest exhibition SoCal Critters\, featuring activities inspired by the exhibition with gallery tours\, air dry clay workshops\, cyanotype nature printing and live wheel-throwing demos!\n\nAMOCA’s new exhibition pays homage to the whimsical ceramic animals sculpted by Howard Pierce throughout his career while celebrating our local wildlife and bringing awareness to conservation efforts. You’ll see familiar critters like cats and rabbits as well as wildlife native to our home in Pomona like coyotes and quails!\n\nTickets may be purchased at time of arrival as space allows\, but pre-registration is highly encouraged.\n\nPlease arrive 10 minutes early for a fun and relaxed check-in process. Late admission is not guaranteed. Event is subject to cancellation if weather conditions are not ideal and refunds will be given out.\n\nAMOCA’s family workshops are for all ages and everyone is welcome! SUMMARY:Introductory Clay Class @ AMOCA
DESCRIPTION:Introductory sessions\, offered monthly\, are the perfect way to get your hands dirty\, relax\, and have fun! Learn the basics of throwing on the potter’s wheel. If you successfully create a bowl\, staff will glaze and fire it after the class is completed—all included in the price of the class. If you’d like to take the piece home with you\, you can come back and pick it up. \nIntroductory sessions last 60 minutes and cost $75. This fee includes everything needed for the class (including clay\, glaze\, and firing services). Introductory sessions are for adults ages 18 and over (students 16+ may attend when accompanied by a paying adult). \nAlong with your class comes complimentary admission to the Museum’s galleries – don’t miss the chance to explore one of the largest collections of ceramic art in the United States!

DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, May 17 at 10am PDT\, AMOCA will premiere a pre-recorded awards ceremony that will include a presentation of the entire 2025 High School Ceramics Exhibition. This video presentation will be shared on our Youtube channel\, @AMOCAmuseum.\n\nRegistered viewers will be emailed a direct link to view the Virtual Premiere the morning of Saturday\, May 17.\n\nThis video presentation\, as well as a virtual gallery of the exhibition\, will exist permanently on our website after the premiere date.\n\nThis program generously funded provided\, in part\, through grants from the Ruth and Joseph C.
